Upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007 from Microsoft Works 9

There seems to be a semi-common problem for people who are attempting to upgrade their Microsoft Works 9 or Microsoft Works SE 9 to Microsoft Office 2007. The upgrade doesn’t work and gives an error that the original program isn’t there. There is a very simple fix for this problem but I haven’t seen any links to it so I am posting one here.

If you are having this problem, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943290 and download the file that is linked to under the “RESOLUTION” heading. Once you have downloaded it, install it and retry your Microsoft Office upgrade. It should now go smoothly.

Happy Computing,

Tim

When I tried to use the patch, I got the following error message.
“The upgrade patch cannot be installed by Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch”.

I had just reinstalled Microsoft Works, 7.0 prior to trying to use the patch.

I’d appreciate any help you can give me in resolving this problem.

    Thanks,

    Rick

    Hello Rick,

If the patch doesn’t work, another thing to try is to insert the original MS Works CD into the drive. Then point the Office installer to it when it is looking to validate the MS Works software to perform the upgrade.

    dude, thanks-

I spent 6 hours trying to resolve this and was actually considering paying Microsatan the $500 (again)

so, do MS purposely hide these little files hoping people will just give up and pay the $500 again?

email me and I’ll write you a check for $50 ( though, with today’s banks, it might bounce)

    best of luck

    Chuck D

So the patch install for Works requires the disk. I do not have disk… it was an OEM…

    What now?

  7. admin Says:

They still should have supplied you with a disc. Sorry but I don’t have any better answer for you.
