If you have earthlink.net for your email provider and suddenly you can receive email but not send, I think I have the solution for you.

I am assuming that you have already checked your username and password as well as your server settings to be certain that they are correct.

If after checking these settings, you still can’t send your email, check your SMTP port settings.

From the Email Account settings page,

1. Click the More Settings button.
2. Click on the Advanced tab.
3. Check the contents of the Outgoing mail (SMTP) field. If it is not 587, delete the contents and type 587.
4. Click the OK button.
5. Click the Next button.
6. Click the Finish button.

This should solve your problem.

If you have Outlook 2007 connecting to Exchange 2007 or SBS 2008 and have been seeing the extremely persistent “Disconnected” button in the bottom right hand corner of your exchange, I think have the fix for you.

You can download the registry fix HERE or go to the PC that has the problem and edit the registry yourself.

** Warning: Editing the registry can be dangerous and Biden PC does not warrant any changes that you make.**

Navigate to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\RPC” and if the “RPC” key doesn’t exist, create it.
Add or edit DWORD value: “DefConnectOpts” and make it “0″

For all of you who use Microsoft Outlook and have never backed up all of your emails, here are step-by-step directions to back up your emails.

1. Open Outlook and give it a minute to download all of your new emails.
2. Click on the File menu and choose Import And Export. If you don’t see Import and Export in the menu, move your mouse-pointer over the down arrows at the bottom of the menu, and then click Import and Export.

4. Click Export To File, and click Next.
5. 
6. Choose Personal Folder File (.pst) , and then click Next.
7. 
8. Choose the account (If you see and “-” signs, click them. You only want to see “+” signs to be sure that you are backing everything up) that you want to backup and click in the check-box that says Include subfolders, then click Next.
9. 
10. Click Browse, and then select the location where you want the new .pst file to be saved. The Desktop is always a good place to save it because its easy to find and you can move it to another drive later.
11. In the File Name box, , type the name that you want to use for the new backup file, and then click OK.
12. 
13. Click Finish.
14. Strangely, this isn’t the end of the line. There is still another box that pops up. Here you have the option to password protect the file. If you choose to use a password, be certain that it is one you’ll remember. Click OK.
15. 
16. Your computer will now show a green progress bar that shows how far in backing up each folder you are. DO NOT cancel this. If you do, you will have an incomplete backup.
17. 
18. Once the backup is complete, copy the file to another drive for safe keeping.

This problem is obviously still happening. If you can afford to be without your computer for a week or 2, I would be glad to work on it free of charge. I had previously written that I had a couple Windows Vista systems that stopped the mouse from clicking. Well, I seem to have found the answer. Meryl’s post “How to Make Microsoft Word Stop Ignoring Mouse” seems to have the answer.

1. While your mouse still works, close Word, Outlook and all other MS Office programs (ignore the pop up message by clicking X)
2. Start / Run and type regedit
3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data
5. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
6. Exit Registry Editor.
7. Restart Word.
8. Thank David for the new info.

If you have never used a registry editor before or are uncomfortable wih it, please consult a professional computer technician. We do these edits all the time.

There seems to be a semi-common problem for people who are attempting to upgrade their Microsoft Works 9 or Microsoft Works SE 9 to Microsoft Office 2007. The upgrade doesn’t work and gives an error that the original program isn’t there. There is a very simple fix for this problem but I haven’t seen any links to it so I am posting one here.

If you are having this problem, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943290 and download the file that is linked to under the “RESOLUTION” heading. Once you have downloaded it, install it and retry your Microsoft Office upgrade. It should now go smoothly.

Do you use Microsoft Office 2007? If not, this is a great reason to start!

With no expensive or additional software, you can easily create Abobe Acrobat .PDF conforming files within Microsoft Office 2007.
Simply download a simple plugin to allow this function. You’ll have to download and run a program that verifies that your copy of Office is legitimate, but you should be able to handle that. Then after you confirm your version of Office, you will be taken to another page to download the actual plugin.

Once it is downloaded, run the plugin and agree to the EULA. After the installation process is complete open any of your Office, Excel, Publisher or anything else you want and choose “Save As” and change the format to PDF. That’s it!

So create all the PDFs you want. For free!
