Have you ever wondered how fast your broadband internet connection really is? Well, here is a link to a great speed test website? Speedtest.net will go through 3 different tests to discover how fast your broadband internet connection really is. It will test your ping speed, your download speed and your upload speed.

What we generally care about the most is our download speed. This controls how fast we can download files and webpages. But another that we really should be thinking about is our upload speed. This is how fast we can upload files and requests for webpages. If we are sending large emails or uploading pictures to social networking sites, this is extremely important.

This is a relatively simple tool to use. Go to the website and click on the gold pyramid. This is assuming that you have all the necessary plugins. If not, you may have to go to Adobe.com and download the latest Flash Player. Then go back to speedtest.net and click on the golden pyramid and it will give you the results of your 3 speed tests.

Recently I’ve had a number of clients whose Verizon DSL has been having problems. The service is extremely slow and the computers seem to have slowed down in general. They all have the MSN login software and it takes at least a minute (literally) to log in and start using the internet. These systems have been scanned for viruses as well as spyware and they are all clean. The problem is with the Verizon connection and MSN software. Though we have not yet been able to keep the login service and remove the problem, we are working on it.

If you live in the San Gabriel Valley and are having these or similar problems, please contact Biden PC to tell us about them. These problems are bigger than just your PC.

Also, if you are having a problem, with spyware, check out this blog topic about spyware blockers. A spyware blocker is a program that blocks you from going to websites that have spyware and also block spyware from entering your computer.

I have an appointment to install RAM (also called memory) in a client’s computer. It has Windows Vista Home Basic with only 512 MB of RAM and he wonders why it is so slow. I don’t care if it is ONLY Windows Vista Home Basic. it still needs 1 gig (1 gigabyte) or RAM. And any other version of Windows Vista needs 2 gigs because it is just too hardware intensive to run well on anything less, no matter what Microsoft says.

So if you have Windows Vista and you keep thinking “Why is my computer so slow” don’t hesitate to put more RAM in it. Your computer will thank you.

And if you are not comfortable installing the RAM, Biden PC is your local computer technician and we’re here to help.

Has your Internet Explorer 7 lost its top menu bar? This just happened to me when I was using a Microsoft website. The Microsoft website was the reason that I was using Internet Explorer 7 but that is a different talk show.

I was trying to do something (a keystroke) and I completely lost the bar at the top of my IE window. So after much playing around with all the key combinations in the areas where my fingers were, I finally found the culprit. It was the Windows Logo Key and F11.

Go ahead and try it. Hold the Windows Logo Keyand press F11 then let go of both. See?!?! Now do it again and the menu bar comes back. Cool huh?

I hope this helps you when it happens to you.

Do you get spyware? Tim Biden is currently conducting a test of different freeware and commercial spyware blockers. Go see how the tests are coming out!
