Have you upgraded to Windows 7 yet? Do you want to? Do you have any questions about it?

Have you thought about the different options that you have to accomplish this task?

  • If you currently have Vista, you can upgrade.
  • If you currently have XP, you can do a clean install and move your data to the new installation.
  • You can purchase a new PC that already has Windows 7 on it and copy your old data from 1 computer to another.

Do you know about the different Windows 7 versions that are available?

  • There are a total of 4 versions, STARTER, HOME PREMIUM, PROFESSIONAL, and ULTIMATE.
  • There are 3 upgrade versions, HOME PREMIUM, PROFESSIONAL, and ULTIMATE.

I’d like to alert you to a simple tool from Microsoft that will advice you on about your abilities of upgrading to Windows 7. The tool is called the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. To quote the Microsoft website… “It scans your hardware, devices, and installed programs for known compatibility issues, gives you guidance on how to resolve potential issues found, and recommends what to do before you upgrade.

Though the way the software reports its findings on your system should be understandable, if you would like help in knowing which path would be best for you, Biden PC would be glad to help. And if you decide that you would like to take the leap to Windows 7, we can facilitate that in the manner that best fits your needs and budget.

I have personally been using Windows 7 since the beta version and I had the final release version 3 weeks before it was available to purchase. I can say with complete confidence that this is a solid and stable OS.

Thank you for reading,
Tim

Are you Looking to Buy a New computer? You Might Want to Wait.

If you’re looking to buy a new PC, you might want to wait a little while. Microsoft is going to release its next Operating system, called Windows 7, on October 22nd and it is much better than Vista.

Windows 7 is what Vista was supposed to be. It has all the features that Windows Vista does but in a faster and superior way. Windows 7 is fast and lean where Vista was slow and fat. Adrian Kingsley-Hughes posted some preliminary benchmark scores in this article. These numbers are a bit old but I think they make the point.

If you have to purchase a PC before October 22nd, I would recommend checking out this Microsoft site because details how you can get a free upgrade from the Vista that comes with your PC to the new Windows 7.

In case you’re wondering why I am hyping this new version of Windows, I can tell you that I have had it on my laptop since the Beta first came out and I think it’s great. I even switched a client to it while it was still in Beta and she loved it. That requires confidence because as a rule, I don’t recommend using pre-release products. Using beta or release candidate software, you never know what bugs or problems you’ll run into. Windows 7 has been a dream and I’ve had no major issues with it. Try saying that about Vista…

So, wait to buy your next PC and upgrade your Vista computer to Windows 7. You’ll be glad you did.

Microsoft just released 2 “High Priority” updates to help protect your online safety.

Yesterday a “Zero Day” vulnerability was discovered that allows malicious and hijacked websites to steal passwords that you have saved in Microsoft Internet Explorer. All versions of explorer are affected and should be upgraded and updated.

To update your system,

  1. Open Internet Explorer (ironic, isn’t it?) and go to:
    http://www.update.microsoft.com.
  2. Click on “Express”.

This will update your system with all necessary updates including the 2 new ones that came out today.

Keep yourself safe online. Keep your computer updated.

“What is computer network consulting?” I get that question from time to time and I think this would be a great time to answer it.

Computer network consulting is one of those ambiguous terms that includes many different issues. In short, the best answer you can get is to ask each company what services they provide for their clients and customers.

I’m certain that if you do ask other computer network consulting companies what services they provide, their list would be a lot like ours. If you ask me that question, I would say that we do the following, and much more…

  • Install and upgrade a networks, servers, and workstations
  • Monitor the health of your network, servers, and workstations
  • Monitor the health of your network’s routers and switches
  • Prevent virus attacks, network intrusions, and network security issues
  • Internet connection support
  • Preventative maintenance of network and computers
  • Network troubleshooting and repair
  • Network hardware, software and cable sales
  • PC troubleshooting and repair
  • Provide desktop support

Those are among the many services that our clients love us for. The short of it is, we keep their network and computers running efficiently so they can keep their business running smoothly.

If there are any specific computer services that you or your business are in need of, contact us.

Upgrade to Microsoft Office 2007 from Microsoft Works 9

There seems to be a semi-common problem for people who are attempting to upgrade their Microsoft Works 9 or Microsoft Works SE 9 to Microsoft Office 2007. The upgrade doesn’t work and gives an error that the original program isn’t there. There is a very simple fix for this problem but I haven’t seen any links to it so I am posting one here.

If you are having this problem, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943290 and download the file that is linked to under the “RESOLUTION” heading. Once you have downloaded it, install it and retry your Microsoft Office upgrade. It should now go smoothly.

Windows Small Business Server 2008

As great as it has been to work with Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003, SBS 2008 looks to be even cooler. There are a bunch of changes that are quite exciting.

  1. The software works on 64 bit hardware. Only.
  2. It deploys as Single-NIC only, with a router required as ISA Server will no longer be offered.
  3. Setup automatically detects your router if addressed between at 192.168.x.1 and 192.168.x.255
  4. A new Administrator account created during setup and the built-in is disabled out of the box. This means that the admin account can be locked out in the event that it is being bombarded with hacking attempts.
  5. The system software versions have been updated to Windows Server 2008, Exchange Server 2007 SP1, Windows SharePoint Services v3, WSUS v3
  6. “My Documents” redirection is no longer all or nothing. You can choose which users should have their “My Documents” redirected to a folder on the server
  7. CALs for SBS 2008 Standard are now less expensive and you can get “Standard” CALs for users that aren’t using the features in Premium.
  8. CALs purchased in 1, 5, or 25 packs instead of just 5 or 20.

There are many more cool features in Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 200. And if this interests you, I highly recommend that you take a look over at Sean Daniel’s SBS 2008 blog.

I recently ran into a blog by a guy named Sean Daniel. He is a member of Microsoft’s Windows SBS Product team. That means that he is intimately familiar with Windows Small Business Server 2003 and 2008.

Sean posts new factoids to his blog just about every day. Some posts are about new features, others are about training opportunities and still others are actual “how to” posts. I am excited about his blog and I wanted to share it with you in the event that you are also interested in Windows Small Business Server 2003 and 2008.
